Even though I have always had a love and feel for music, I wasn't able to really get into it until I discovered the turntables in '96. I had been going to parties and clubs since '95, even though I was underage. I finally had an opportunity to try a friends turntables in the later part of '96 or early '97, can't remember. After that, my boy Kane AKA Dj Kaotic of Company of Strangers (ID Recordings) went to New York for his senior trip and bought a set of tables. We practiced constantly along with Jahli. I started with the little records my friends had until I could afford my own. Then I just started spending all my time and money on my music. It was like crack to me.
My family and friends have always been supportive. I landed my first gig opening a party at 6 months in. I still wasn't very good in my opinion but, it was a good learning experience. I was still playin alot of ragga or jump up at the time. A friend of mine who is known as one of the founding fathers of our dnb scene in Mississippi, Delaney AKA Captn-D AKA Dfekt, took me under his wing and showed me the darker side.... and, I loved it!
Since hip hop was a huge influence in my style, I couldn't just go over to the dark side so easily. So, I mixed it together. Which gave me somthing that most people around here didn't have. A mixture of different types of dnb in my set, along with a hip hop / turntablism style of mixing. I have been on alot of shows in the southeast, too many to name. I moved to Orlando, FL in '99 with my boy Jahli. Where I ran into the Torque Crew (Melissa, Collaborator, Circle K, and Ben Matrix). Ben and I became good friends while I was there. Also, Push Button Objects was my nieghbor! Jahli and I were both going to go to Fullsail. When I couldn't get in, I got frustrated and moved back home. My boy Kane was living in Denver, CO at the time. I got back into throwing parties in Jackson, and I spent all of my spare time practicing. I got tired of the same old and had to get out so I moved to Denver - where we met my boy Hayashi. This kid had the hook up on the house parties so... we did the damn thing. After 6 months or so, we ended up moving back home for finacial reasons beyond our control. We talked our boy Hayashi into coming back and started throwing parties again in '01 under the name Straight Out Da Lab (SODL) Productions. We had the scene on lock and made a lot of connections including the bond I made with the OTB Crew!
We did our thing for a minute. We were able to buy sound and lights and bring in a few headliners before we got put on the 5 o'clock news for throwing "rave" parties. Alot of kids got popped and we decided it wasn't worth getting in trouble over so we shut down shop. I got into production with a friend of mine named Wes Oden. Did our first track in two days. After SODL had split and gone our seperate ways. I was invited to be a part of the OTB Crew in the later part of '01.
We all have been working really hard to push our music in this region. Some of the crew have moved off to other places like California, Texas, Alabama, Arizona, and so on. This has allowed us to promote our music even more in those areas. Since our crew is so big, it is hard to organize everything. So, a few of us started Rules of Culture / Sandia Recordings in '05. I am working hard on my hip hop and dnb right now. Looking to be finished with a few albums for '07.
So, don't sleep..... We're about to take over! |
